Shipping Container Storage vs. Traditional Storage Shed

The primary difference between a shipping container storage and a shipping container storage shed lies in their intended use and construction. Let’s explore the similarities and differences.

Similarities

  • Both storage options provide adequate space for storing anything, i.e., household and office belongings, equipment, etc.
  • Both options have a sturdy construction and locking system to protect cargo from theft and vandalism.
  • You can customize both options to include features like shelves and windows.
  • They’re versatile and can be used for residential, commercial, or industrial storage.

Differences

  • Shipping container storage units are portable and easily transported. Storage sheds are fixed structures and are not intended for frequent relocation.
  • Shipping container storage is from repurposed durable steel shipping containers. Storage sheds are built using wood, metal, or plastic.
  • Shipping container storage units have limited storage since they’re primarily available in standard sizes of 20 or 40 ft unless customized to a user’s needs. Storage sheds can be built to custom sizes from scratch.
  • Costs vary depending on size, condition (new or used), and shipping container modifications. However, buying a shipping container is more affordable than constructing or purchasing a traditional shed. Please call, text, or email us for pricing on shipping container storage units.

How to Set up a Shipping Container for Storage

Shipping containers have unlimited use ideas like home renovations, art workshops, gardening sheds, and sports equipment storage. Depending on your local regulations and needs, you can set up a shipping container for storage anywhere.

This can be your property, a vacant lot, or a rented storage facility. Check with your town clerk to ensure compliance with local zoning laws.

Placing shipping container storage on blocks is one of the best shipping container setup best practices. Blocks provide stability and ensure proper airflow underneath. They also prevent moisture buildup and possible damage.

Here are step-by-step instructions for placing a shipping container on blocks.

Materials needed

  • Shipping container
  • Concrete blocks
  • Leveling tools like a spirit level
  • Forklift or crane
  • Shovel or excavator

Step 1: Identify the location

Identify a location on your property with enough space and easy access for placing the shipping container.

Step 2: Prepare the ground

Remove debris and obstacles to prepare the ground for a flat, stable surface.

Step 3: Position and level the blocks

Place the blocks at specific intervals, then use a spirit level to ensure that the blocks are at the same height. The number of blocks you require will depend on the container's size and weight.

Step 4: Lower the container

Carefully lower the shipping container on the blocks using a forklift or crane, depending on size and weight. Ensure it’s stable and leveled correctly.
