How Much Does a 20-Foot Shipping Container Hold?
A 20-foot shipping container's capacity varies depending on whether you consider volume or weight.
Volume: A 20-foot container offers approximately 32.6 cubic meters (1,172 cubic feet) of usable space. This accounts for the interior dimensions (roughly 19 ft 4 in length x 7 ft 9 in width x 7 ft 10 in height), leaving room for structural elements and easy loading/unloading.
Weight: The maximum weight allowed in a 20-foot container, known as the payload capacity, typically reaches around 25,400 kg (28 tons). However, this limit may differ based on the shipping line's rules and the specific container. Verifying the weight restriction before loading the container is crucial to prevent exceeding capacity.

★★★★★
"We bought a used 40’ high cube shipping container from Allison Shipping Containers and the process was so easy from start to finish. We just moved from California to Mountain View on the Big Island and had no idea how to go about getting a shipping container. Allison made it easy by arranging the delivery and everything. The container is great and does the job of keeping all our storage items dry and secure. Will purchase from Allison again."

“Allison is the warmest, kindest, most helpful and professional business operator I can imagine. She provided a variety of options and detailed pricing, put me in contact with a superb draftsman on the Big Island, and smoothed the path on shipping when rain necessitated delays. Above and beyond at every turn, I will definitely choose her company again for future purchases. If I could offer 6 stars I would!"

What to Expect When Buying a 20' Container
- The container arrives by truck and may require a crane for offloading. Ensure it's placed on a level, well-drained surface to prevent rust/water damage.
- Looking for modifications? At Allison Shipping, we can transform your primary container into a backyard office, pool cabana, or vacation rental – check out our projects on how we transformed our containers for our different clients.
- We recommend regular maintenance, especially for Hawaii's humid climate – repainting scratched areas, checking for leaks, and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
- Permits may be required (check with your county's Department of Planning and Permitting).
- Invest in security measures if needed (locks, alarms, cameras).
Additional Considerations:
- Placing a container on your property might require a permit. In Hawaii, check with your county's Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) for specifics, especially if your property is in a Special Management Area (SMA). Many HOAs in Hawaii also restrict container placement. Review your HOA guidelines before purchasing.
- Invest in additional security measures like locks, alarms, or security cameras depending on contents and location.
